Biography
Laura Bordin was born in Venice. She graduated from the IUAV University of Venice, in Visual and Performing Arts, where she wrote her thesis called, Reflections on Acting, about Tim Stark and David Mamet. Her interest for visual communication brought her back to the IUAV, for visual and multimedia design, where she enrolled into the graduate program. Laura graduated cum laude, specializing in interaction design. Laura is particularly keen on visual and interaction design, especially within the human and social aspects of the two disciplines. Her thesis, Heart Lift, applies interaction design to the medical field, in an effort to develop a tele-monitoring system for skiers with heart conditions.
Description
The project is made of a website, a mobile application, some mobile devices to detect the environmental conditions (electrocariograph, sensors, LEDs).
Communication objective
Heart Lift is a telemonitoring system for heart patients, who want to practice physical activities in high altitudes. It could be an important help in the rehabilitation process, since its aim is to reassure the user and teach a more constructive approach to the data that comes from the monitoring devices. The system comprises of a website, where the user can pre-set his account and visualize the results of his skiing, the altitude reached, the temperature, and, above all, his heart rate. The system includes a kit with a Bluetooth electrocardiograph and a special pair of gloves, with a built-in Bluetooth temperature sensor and an LED system for visualizing possible bad conditions. Also developed is the corresponding application for Smartphone users, that detects and analyzes the data coming from the input devices, transmits them to the server of the website, and in case of emergency, sends an alert to the other users.
Tools used
Adobe InDesign was used to write and design the layout for the thesis. Adobe Illustrator was used to design the icons, the logo, and the cover for the report. Adobe Photoshop helped create the visual design of the mobile application and the website of the system, while Adobe Premiere Pro was able to help with the video-scenario. The final version of the presentation and the report is in Adobe Acrobat.
